Tooth Fairy (Houses on Fire)

I have had the honor of being a tooth fairy. It was the responsibility of this job that started me thinking about the ritual of saving, cherishing, and then trading this small piece of bone for cash. Where and how did it start? Is it a worldwide ritual?

The phenomenon is distributed widely and manifests in many forms...  Some put the teeth on top of the house

Some bury it below the house.

In Mexico, el Ratón de los Dientes collects the tooth and leaves a small gift under the pillow.

Fatina dei denti, also a rodent, is the collector of baby teeth in Italy.

In India, China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam children throw their bottom teeth toward the sky and upper teeth down to the floor, with hopes that new, permanent teeth will grow strong in the same direction that the baby tooth was thrown.

Others toss it with no regard to its special-ness...
